![]() That was unusually behavior for an awa awa. I kept the drag light so the hooks wouldn’t pull and the fish swam towards me after its initial run. The fish was on longer than the few seconds I normally would take to lose an awa awa and my confidence grew. I called out to Frank and was glad I had just changed to a fresh leader. Maybe the water was too calm and clear, and the predators were a little suspicious of our offerings?Īn hr and a half into our paddle, I got an odd, erratic tap on the line and turned to see an awa awa leave the surface of the water. We had 7 live oama each and yet the first 5 or so were cut in half, crushed or spit out by small papio, aha and one large papio that took line and shed Frank’s double hook. Frank and I decided to stay in the safety of the bay and hunt for something more exotic than omilu and whites. The forecast called for light north winds, with surf on the south and east shores. My family and friends much prefer awa awa paste to oio paste so I was on a mission to land one. Here’s how I hooked and lost the last one. ![]() ![]() The are the hardest fish for me to land because they aren’t often encountered, jump when hooked, and often succeed in tearing the hook out of their soft mouth. Uncle Roberts no longer feels like that type of place. The awa awa have eluded me all year. When I travel I like to spend my time and hard earned dollars in places where I feel welcomed and safe. Instead of spending the evening enjoying the local talent and shopping in the market we left. As we finished our drinks we began to feel like our safety could be compromised as we felt we were being watched by several locals. She made it clear that we were not welcome. She began to move the stick back and forth towards my sister in a very threatening manner. When my sister tried to apologize and let the woman know she was unaware it was her seat the woman went on to threaten and intimidate us by slamming a big ornamental stick on the table narrowly missing my sisters head. Right away a woman came over and began shouting at us apparently she was sitting in the seat where the couple were going to sit. Another couple came by and asked my sister if they could sit down to which she replied of course. We took my sister who was on her first holiday, bought a drink and sat down to visit and enjoy the music. Everytime I visit the island I make a point of spending some time and money here but that will no longer happen. In the past I would have agreed with all of the other reviewers rating Uncle Roberts. But don't let this discourage you: if you're into paying $20 per person to just go drinking and dancing with locals/natives, like a bar, and have a Hawaiian plate of food for additional money, this is still a good spot. That they used to have 200 vendors and there was no cover fee. That people from different islands would come here on Wednesday night just for this event. We stayed outside and roamed a little bit, and we talked to a person who told us that this was the IT event before covid. However they said no, that food wasn't ready yet, that it would take more than an hour, and they would have to allow all the people that paid to go in front of me in line. We were mainly there for all the local vendors. We asked if we could just buy a plate of food and leave Since we had a long drive ahead of us and it wasn't what we expected at all. They're still a lovely live band, and I believe you can bring your own booze or buy some,And I hear there's some pretty good native Hawaiian food. However I'm pregnant, and my husband doesn't drink, so it just seemed like we were playing a cover price to go into a bar where we couldn't drinks We got there around 6:40pm, Parking is a little shady. However after driving 3 hours there, we were very disappointed because of the $20 cover charge and 0 vendors. We've never been there, and all we read were the positive reviews of how amazing this place is when the live bands (who plays Hawaiian sounding Island music) and the tons of vendors. I would highly encourage you to call and see if it's back to the way it was before covid.
